Best Bar None Award

July 2005 saw the launch of the Best Bar None Awards. The scheme, sponsored by Diageo, is open to all licensed premises in Glasgow City Centre and focuses on safety and customer care. Each licensed venue will have the opportunity to prove that it meets certain standards and will awarded an accreditation certificate and plaque.

This year’s Play Safe in Glasgow campaign was launched on 23rd November 2007 and will run for 8 weeks until January. The campaign is aimed at young people aged 18 – 30 who socialise in the city centre.  A wide range of media are being used to promote messages about safer socialising, healthy drinking and safer transport home – with a particular emphasis on students and employers.

The Nite Zone safe transport scheme was successfully launched on 2nd December 2005. This aims to make existing transport more convenient, accessible and safe by a number of measures including replacing lighting, increasing CCTV coverage, installing public help points, providing taxi rank marshalls and improving communication.

The Community Prevention Trial is a way of looking at the impact of all the strands of work of the City Centre Alcohol Action Group. The group plans to analyse data from Accident and Emergency at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, the Scottish Ambulance Service and Strathclyde Police, as well as monitor media coverage and carry out a survey of public perceptions of alcohol and safety issues.

The Custody Card pilot scheme is well under way. Over 60% of arrests in Glasgow City Centre are alcohol related. The card is given to people arrested where alcohol has played a significant part and contains information on support services. So far this has helped a number of people to access counselling services.

The City Centre Alcohol Action Group is committed to preventing disorder within licensed premises in Glasgow. Research into the Factors Associated With Alcohol-Related Problems Within Licensed Premises was published in April 2005. Click here to download the Executive Summary Report.

The Play Safe in Glasgow conference exploring alcohol and the evening economy took place on 2nd February 2005. The conference was well attended by a range of partners committed to reducing alcohol related crime and fear of crime in Glasgow city centre. Feedback from the workshops has been incorporated into the GCCAAG Plan. Click here to download the conference report.
